- Regular Brown faculty who are interested in becoming an IBES fellow should follow the process to become an IBES Affiliate.
- After spending one year or more engaged in Institute activities as an IBES Affiliate, faculty are eligible to be nominated as an IBES Elected fellow.

Affiliate fellows are regular Brown faculty who are not formally rostered within the Institute, but are interested in and supportive of the research activities in the Institute. Affiliates may be nominated for appointment by self or by current fellows. A statement of interest and a short CV should be supplied, and a simple majority vote of the Fellows Council is required for affiliation. There is no term limit. Affiliate fellows are encouraged to attend any Institute events or fellows meetings, but are not eligible to vote or receive funding.
Elected fellows are regular Brown faculty who are not formally rostered within the Institute. Elected fellows may be nominated from the roster of Affiliate fellows for appointment by self or by current fellows. A record of involvement in Institute activities for at least one year should be supplied, and a simple majority of the Fellows Council is required for election. Elected fellows are appointed to a renewable 3 year term and are expected to contribute to the Institute during their term. Initial appointments and all renewals require acceptance by the nominee, the tabling of a statement of ongoing interest, and a vote by the Fellows Council. Elected fellows are eligible to vote on all non-personnel matters and to receive funding.
(Note: Core fellows are regular Brown faculty (Instructors through Professors, and including Lecturers and Senior Lecturers) who are formally rostered by the University in the Institute.)
