Emily Joyce

Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences

Biography

Emily Joyce is a fifth year PhD student in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, studying the reactive nitrogen cycle and the impacts that it has on coastal areas and the open ocean. More specifically, she is interested in characterizing the sources and composition of atmospheric nitrate in rainwater and aerosols in polluted (e.g., urban and continental) and pristine (e.g., open ocean) atmospheres using nitrate concentrations, stable isotopes, and atmospheric transport modeling to diagnose anthropogenic versus naturally derived nitrate. Emily's current projects look at nitrogen deposition over 1) the Pacific ocean by collecting samples in China and the open ocean (cruises), and 2) Providence, RI and Narragansett Bay by collecting samples at Brown University and along the Bay.
