Summer’s research focuses on the impacts of environmental contamination on community health. Her thesis work examined food security and food sovereignty within the Narragansett Indian Tribe. In addition to the additive effects of stress on the body from limited access to traditional tribal lands. She works to analyze and restore the traditional heritage diet of the Narragansett Tribe through food sovereignty. Motivated by her thesis work, Summer’s research here at Brown aims to work with other communities in need, to address the impacts of environmental contamination on their health. She is currently working on an interactive website that links resources with pre-identified environmental exposures.
