About the IBES Catalyst Research Awards

These annual awards provide funding for faculty-led, solutions-driven environmental research that crosses disciplines and has the potential for meaningful societal impact.

Ittleson Professor of Environment and Society J. Timmons Roberts will support undergraduate climate policy research through Brown’s Climate and Development Lab, where students investigate barriers to ambitious and equitable climate action in the United States. Catalyst support will allow the undergraduate research team to spend five days in Washington, D.C., meeting with policymakers, climate experts, journalists, and civil society organizations and presenting their research to key audiences. The experience will give students a firsthand look at how climate policy is developed and debated while providing feedback on their research, exposure to climate-policy careers, and experience navigating professional policy environments.

There’s no substitute for putting students in the rooms where climate policy is actually being discussed and debated. They’ll have the opportunity to test their research with people doing this work every day and to begin seeing themselves as people who can contribute to those conversations.
