IBES funds a variety of programs for undergraduates, including our competitive Voss Environmental Fellowships; high-quality, curated summer internships; and funding for summer research experiences.
IBES Extended Undergraduate Research Assistantships
Student applications will be available April 28 – May 12, 2026.
In this new program, undergraduates are paired with faculty mentors to pursue paid multi-semester research opportunities, combining hands-on experience and professional development to prepare students for careers in climate, sustainability, and the environment.
- Student applications through UTRA student portal: April 28 – May 12.
- Matches announced: June 11.
- Eligibility: Open to all Brown undergraduates, with preference given to first-years, sophomores, and first-semester juniors.
- Funding: Stipends will be commensurate with the SPRINT Program.
Voss Fellows Program
Applications for 2026–2027 Voss Fellows have closed.
The Voss Fellowship Program is the premier training and funding opportunity for undergraduates interested in environmental research at Brown University. Open to rising juniors and seniors in any concentration, the fellowship awards a large stipend and provides research funds to support independent projects. Students from fields in STEM, the social sciences, and the humanities who wish to pursue research that addresses climate, environmental, or sustainability challenges are encouraged to apply.

The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society has partnered with environmental organizations to offer paid summer internship experiences for Brown University undergraduate students. These awards allow students to explore career options and engage in experiential learning activities outside of the classroom.
