Institute at Brown for Environment and Society

Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

IBES funds a variety of programs for undergraduates, including our competitive Voss Environmental Fellowships; annual high-quality, curated summer internships; and funding for summer research experiences.

IBES ENVS Summer Research & Internship Award 2023

No Longer Accepting Applications for Summer 2023

IBES has some funding available for substantive summer research and internship experiences in fields relevant to the environmental studies and sciences concentrations at Brown.  These awards are for ENVS concentrators who were not eligible to receive university funding, or whose applications for funding were not accepted (ie. LINK, UTRA, Royce, Voss).  Students who apply for the IBES award, but are offered summer 2023 funding from another source, MUST accept that opportunity in lieu of IBES Funding.

Voss Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Environmental Science and Communication

No Longer Accepting Applications for Summer 2023

Voss Fellowships are the premier training and funding opportunities for undergraduates interested in environmental research at Brown, offering awardees a large stipend, plus additional funds for related expenses. They are open to rising seniors in any concentration who intend to pursue a summer project that will become the framework for their honors thesis.  Please note that the research must address a challenge facing our environment, such as - the effects of pollution on childhood asthma, the migration of species due to rising temperatures, or tackling misinformation campaigns in regard to climate change (to name a few).

IBES Summer Internship Program

No Longer Accepting Applications for Summer 2023

The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES) has partnered with environmental organizations to offer paid summer internship experiences for Brown University undergraduate students. These awards allow students to explore career options and engage in experiential learning activities outside of the classroom. Please note - IBES will provide the intern with a stipend in place of a salary paid by the organization.  This year we've partnered with the following organizations:

  • Audubon Society of Rhode Island
  • Orion Magazine
  • City of Providence Parks Department, RWP Botanical Center
  • Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management
  • The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island
  • Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Columbia Law School
  • University of Miami School of Law, Center for Ethics and Public Service, Community Equity Lab
