Summer Internships
IBES funds undergraduate research and internship experiences each summer. Here are a few of the students' stories in their own words.
Eligibility Criteria & Expectations
You may apply if you meet ALL of the following criteria:
- You are an active Brown undergraduate student (May 2025 graduates are not eligible).
- Student must file an I9 and present HR with TWO original unexpired documents in order to be able to receive a summer stipend
- You must be taking courses on campus in Spring 2025. Students currently studying abroad have “away from campus” status, and are thus ineligible to apply.
- International students are eligible to apply, but may be subject to tax withdrawals if their nation of citizenship does not have treaty benefits with the U.S. - please contact the Brown Payroll Office if you have questions regarding this matter.
- These awards may not be combined with other funding from Brown, such as UTRA, Voss Fellowships, IBES ENVS Concentrator Summer Research & Internship Awards, Royce, or Link awards.
- Students are expected to complete a minimum of 320 hours of supervised work (8-12 weeks). Experience is for the summer only, so work has to be completed by August 31, 2025.
- Provide a 1-2 paragraph midsummer summary on what the experience has been like thus far - such as projects contributed to, new skills learned, challenges met, or anything else that has helped the student grow. If possible, we also expect the student provide some pictures of their efforts.
- Selected students and the organizations they work with will be required to submit feedback forms at the end of the internship experience
- Turn in a final deliverable that is either:
- Create a short video about my experience that I will turn in before the end of August. IBES is looking for something with a format similar to a TikTok post - recordings should have a vertical format, and be about a minute or less in length.
- Or create a 36” x 48” research poster that will be presented at the IBES Open House during family weekend in October.
Submission guidelines
- Cover Letter explaining your interest in the opportunity and how you believe this experience will benefit you academically & professionally.
- Current Résumé; you can visit the Center for Career Exploration site for résumé & cover letter tips.
- Provide the contact information for at least one reference (preferably a Brown faculty member, though not required). DON’T send letters of recommendation, just info on how to contact a reference in case organization chooses to ask them about you. Click here to download Reference Contact Information Form.
