Organizations hosting interns are invited to submit a short description of the opportunity (G-Form), including required and/or preferred skills, to which students from across Brown will apply. The organization reviews the applicant pool to interview and select their candidates. Brown then organizes the match.

Brown students are distinguished nationwide, and indeed globally, by their proven ability to take initiative for their own learning, think systemically and critically, and execute at the highest level. The IBES internship program draws students from across campus, with skills from environmental studies and science, economics, anthropology, applied math, environmental humanities, computer science and many other fields.

Employers are asked to pair each intern with a mentor who will supervise their work for the duration of the internship. Interns appreciate opportunities to interact with additional staff as colleagues and mentors to learn more about the organization and how it approaches its mission.

Summer internships typically run ten weeks for approximately 35-40 hours/week, and can be in-person, remote or hybrid. Fall or spring internships last for one or two semesters, with a cap of ten hours/week for full-time students or 40 hours/week for students on academic leave from Brown. 

Yes, internships can be fully remote, fully in-person, or hybrid. Part time academic year internships must account for the student’s residence in Providence.

Student interns can be funded by Brown, by the organization, or a combination: cost-sharing allows our limited funding to support more interns and a larger diversity of organizational hosts. 

Cohorts of students begin each year in January, June and September. Academic year placements must be within the Providence area or available to work remotely. See above for host application deadlines. 

To apply for a STEP internship, students must submit an application through the Brown University SPRINT Fellowship program, which uses a unified matching process to pair students with host organizations each cycle.

Beyond the internship itself, STEP includes professional development workshops, alumni networking, and an annual Climate Career Fair held during Brown Climate Week.
