Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

IBES funds a variety of programs for undergraduates, including our competitive Voss Environmental Fellowships; high-quality, curated summer internships; and funding for research experiences.

IBES/STEP Internship Program

Student applications for fall 2026 internships are available until May 19, 2026.

The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society has partnered with environmental organizations to offer paid internship experiences (10 hours/week in the academic year) for Brown University undergraduate students. The program will be offered September 4 to December 11. These awards allow students to explore career options and engage in experiential learning activities outside of the classroom.

IBES Extended Undergraduate Research Assistantships

Student applications are open until May 5 (IBES EURA) and May 19, 2026 (standard UTRA). See below for details.

In this new program, undergraduates are paired with faculty mentors to pursue paid multi-semester research opportunities, combining hands-on experience and professional development to prepare students for careers in climate, sustainability, and the environment.

The program has two entry points:

  • Pathway 1 — Standard UTRA: for new research assistantships (RAs). Apply through the UTRA portal by May 19, 2026.
  • Pathway 2 — IBES Extended URA: for existing RAs (such as an UTRA or other demonstrated research collaboration between the faculty and student who then apply together). Apply by May 5, 2026.
