Native Americans at Brown to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day

The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society is proud to support Native Americans at Brown's celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day through co-sponsorship of the group's celebration on Sunday, October 8th.

On that date, the group will be hosting a Social, similar to a small pow wow, for the Brown and local Native communities. The celebration will include two drum groups from local communities who will sing songs for intertribal and social dancing. Mashpee Wampanoag chef, Sherry Pocknett, will cater a full meal for the event.

The group explains:

"We hope to make this day a tribute to the living culture within Native/Indigenous communities. By inviting local Native community members and artists, we aim to strengthen NAB's ongoing relationship with these communities as well as recognize the land on which Brown has been built. We also hope to make this a space for Native/Indigenous students to share their culture through performance or presentation. This is an opportunity to reach out to more students who identify as Native or Indigenous on Brown's and RISD's campuses, and to grow and strengthen the NAB support system."

IBES Director Amanda Lynch stresses the importance of the group's celebration in light of a global history of injustice against first peoples. "This is an important step in changing the narrative and redressing the legacy of colonial invasions around the world," she says.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, see NAB's event page.
