Institute at Brown for Environment and Society

New scholars bring fresh perspectives to IBES this fall

Meet the newest members of the IBES community, whose work spans climate science, economics, agriculture, sociology, public health, and global policy.

Welcoming new faculty

IBES welcomes new faculty whose work expands the Institute's strengths in environmental economics and sustainable food systems, further advancing its interdisciplinary education and research mission.

Dev Patel

Environment meets economics

Dev Patel, Peggy and Henry D. Sharpe Jr. Assistant Professor of Economics and Environmental Science, is IBES' first joint appointment with the Department of Economics. His research explores climate adaptation, environmental policy, nature-based solutions, remote sensing, and economic resilience.

Damien Tschantré

The politics of political discourse

Damien Tschantré, a visiting researcher joining IBES on September 1, studies how political discourse shapes public understanding of climate and energy issues, with a focus on climate delay, denial, and government action in France and the United States.

New postdocs expand the Institute’s research community

The six new postdoctoral research associates in environment and society bring expertise that ranges from Arctic hydrology and lithium geochemistry to sustainable agriculture, environmental sociology, and global climate governance.

Faculty mentor: Timmons Roberts

Connecting sustainable agriculture and wellbeing

Voss Postdoc Jonathan Vivas is a quantitative social scientist whose research explores the connections between human wellbeing and environmental decision-making, with a focus on how mental health influences the adoption of agricultural conservation practices.

Faculty mentor: Meredith Niles

Greenland hydrology and remote sensing

Sarah Esenther ’26 PhD studies changing hydrology in northern environments using remote sensing, including innovative approaches to measuring runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Faculty mentor: Laurence Smith

Tracing climates of the past

Leah Travis-Taylor specializes in paleoclimatology and stable isotope geochemistry. Her research uses cave deposits to reconstruct past climates, revealing how tropical precipitation has changed over time and what has driven those shifts.

Faculty Mentor: Daniel Ibarra

Toxic substances and environmental policy

Voss Postdoc Gabriel Lévesque explores how environmental risks are understood, communicated, and regulated, with a focus on toxic substances and corporate influence.

Faculty mentor: Scott Frickel

Lithium deposits and water quality

Gordon Williams, who will be joining the team in October, investigates the environmental geochemistry of lithium deposits and the water quality impacts of lithium extraction.
