I am a historian working on modern China, and my current dissertation project focuses on the connection between riverine changes and the rise of social margins in the lake areas of Yangzi Delta from the 1850s to 1949. This research demonstrates how much the lake environment formed political spaces for local fishers and boat-living people, which I conceptualized as "littoral communities," to develop strategies tackling the state authorities. The religious practices of these communities, especially their syncretic links to the local Catholic Church, will be critical for me to explore the conversation between inland water environments and religion.
