Johnny Ryan

Former Voss Postdoctoral Research Associate

Biography

Johnny is a glaciologist who uses satellite and UAV remote sensing to understand processes of glacier mass loss. Specifically, he is interested in how we measure albedo using different instruments and platforms, and how we can upscale our results to regional climate models. As part of this research, he developed fixed-wing and multi-rotor UAVs for deployment in Greenland and Patagonia. At Brown, he works with Prof. Laurence Smith studying meltwater runoff production from the Greenland Ice Sheet. Johnny has a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Nottingham, UK, a master’s degree in Polar Studies from the Scott Polar Research Institute at University Cambridge, and has recently completed his PhD at the Centre for Glaciology at Aberystwyth University, Wales.
