Dr. Sacoby Wilson will speak about his experiences as an environmental health scientist with a focus on environmental justice, and the role of community engagement in his work. Reception to follow in the IBES lobby.

Dr. Wilson is Director of T.H.E. EJ Lab and the Center for Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health and a Professor at the University of Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health. Dr. Wilson has 20+ years of experience as an environmental health scientist in the areas of exposure science, environmental justice, environmental health disparities, community-based participatory research, water quality analysis, air pollution studies, built environment, industrial animal production, climate change, community resiliency, and sustainability.

Special guests Dr. Sacoby Wilson (Director, T.H.E. EJ Lab; Director, the Center for Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health; Professor, University of Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health) and Camilo Viveiros (Executive Director, the George Wiley Center) will join Dawn King (Director of Undergraduate Studies, IBES; Senior Lecturer of Environment & Society) in this conversation moderated by Scott Frickel (Professor, Environment & Society and Sociology). Dr. Wilson is Director of T.H.E. Camilo Viveiros has been the George Wiley Center of Pawtucket, RI’s Coordinator/Executive Director since the founding Director’s retirement in 2016, roles that are preceded by his service as lead organizer for 4 years. With nearly 30 years of community organizing experience, locally and beyond, Camilo is deeply dedicated to pushing for both short- and longer-term collective goals. Bringing his background as a first-generation working-class organizer, trainer, and strategist, Camilo works to build community power toward justice and liberation.
